Zoo Med’s NEW Tropical Bioblend is the perfect substrate for your Tropical Bioactive Terrarium. Let’s break down what’s in it:
- The ReptiSoil base combines humus, peat moss, sand and carbon to provide a living space for your “Clean-Up-Crew” to thrive in while also providing nutrients to your plants.
- Also added to this substrate blend is ReptiBark. These small chips of Fir Tree bark provide drainage and aeration for the soil and prevents compaction making sure that your invertebrates can move about the substrate.
- Lastly, Sphagnum Moss is added to retain moisture and boost the humidity of your tropical terrarium. Sphagnum moss will also resist decay making this substrate long lasting.
WHAT IS BIOACTIVE?
The term “bioactive” is used to describe a miniature ecosystem created in a terrarium or vivarium. In a functional bioactive habitat, small invertebrates (aka: Clean-up Crew) break down waste from your pet to make nutrients available for live plants to consume. This incredible living network forms a balance that can reduce the maintenance of your habitat while enhancing its look. The right substrate mix is critical to a successful bioactive habitat as it will be where your “Clean-Up Crew” will do their part to convert waste and where plants will root to take up the excess nutrients.

Live animal shipping is highly specialized and requires specialty handling with heated/cooled and insulated boxes, as well as careful weather monitoring.
- Animals are shipped Priority Overnight for NEXT DAY arrival on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays only for door-to-door service.
- Some rural zones may have exceptions.
- Live animals are NOT shipped like regular mail and require special agreements with qualified couriers.
- All Reptiles staff receive special packing training, ensuring climate-controlled transportation from start to finish.
- A signature is required upon arrival, so someone must be home to receive the shipment.
- Healthy arrival guarantees apply when the shipping process is followed correctly.
- We will contact you after purchase to arrange a safe ship date.

Personally my favorite reptile store. I don't typically buy any animals from pet shops but I do buy my feeders and reptile merchandise here. I like coming here mainly due to the staff. We spent 2 hours with David, he was super helpful, purchased critter cage, natural materials for the space with a leopard gecko (molten lavender). 1000 live crickets and everything needed to get our new pet Queso set up. They also do boarding services, so no worries about a solution for our new friend if we go away. Our 11 year old daughter is so happy with the new addition to our family!

Yes, all of our reptiles are checked for good health before being listed for sale. We ensure they’re eating well and displaying normal behaviour. They are checked again before shipping.
You’ll need an appropriate enclosure, heating, lighting, substrate and hides. Food is usually not needed until a few days later. Contact us if you need help setting up the perfect environment.
All animals come with a healthy arrival guarantee. Animals are shipped with Overnight Delivery wherever possible and using insulated boxes and heat/cool packs (as needed) to ensure safe transit. Shipping is scheduled on specific days to avoid delays and extreme weather. We also offer and highly recommend local depot pick up in your area but we can also ship directly to your home whenever safe to do so.
