Gargoyle Geckos

A gargoyle gecko is a small to medium-sized gecko species native to the island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific. They are named "gargoyle" due to the bony protrusions on their heads, which resemble the stone gargoyles found in Gothic architecture. These crests give them a rugged, almost mythical appearance.

Here are some key features of gargoyle geckos:

  • Size: Typically about 7 to 9 inches (including the tail) when fully grown.
  • Colour: They come in a variety of colors and patterns, including gray, brown, orange, red, and white. Their patterning can include stripes, blotches, or marbling.
  • Body: They have a stocky build with strong limbs, a broad head, and prehensile tails that can regenerate if lost.
  • Personality: Gargoyle geckos are generally docile and easy to handle, making them popular pets. They can be more active at night since they are nocturnal.
  • Habitat: In the wild, they live in the forested areas of New Caledonia, typically in trees or low vegetation.
  • Diet: They are omnivorous, eating a mix of insects, fruit, and nectar. In captivity, they thrive on commercial gecko diets designed to mimic their natural food.
