Zero Bearded Dragon

A zero bearded dragon is a type of bearded dragon (Pogona species) that has a unique genetic mutation resulting in a lack of pigmentation. This mutation makes zero bearded dragons appear almost entirely white or light grey. They are highly sought after in the reptile pet trade due to their distinctive appearance. This particular one had its tail in shed during the time of these photographs and once it sheds out, the dark coloration will disappear.

Key Characteristics

  1. Coloration:

  • Zero bearded dragons are notable for their almost complete lack of color, appearing white or light grey.
  • Unlike albinism, where animals lack all pigmentation and often have pink or red eyes, zero bearded dragons retain normal eye color and patterns.
  1. Genetics:

  • The "zero" trait is recessive, meaning a bearded dragon must inherit the gene from both parents to display the zero phenotype.
  • This trait is different from other color morphs like leucistic (partially lacking pigment but with some patterning) or albino (complete lack of melanin).
